Children’s Liturgy of the Word is offered during the 8:30 AM Mass on Sunday. During CLOW, lay leaders of prayer give our young children the experience of hearing and celebrating the Liturgy of the Word from a lectionary that is written in language they can better understand.
As the adult assembly is about to listen to the Sunday scripture readings and homily, trained adults and volunteers accompany the children to Room 1. The readings for the day are read, and a reflection is given that helps the children form a connection between scripture and their young lives. There is time for discussion in small groups to share ideas and ask questions. The celebration concludes with intercessions, and then the children return to their families in the worship space for the remainder of the liturgy.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is designed for all children between the ages of 5 and 10. Suitability for children younger than kindergarten age or older than 5th grade should be decided by the parents on an individual basis.
As a parent, feel free to come to experience Children’s Liturgy of the Word to see what is happening and to help you decide if this may be a ministry you would enjoy. Anyone who likes to work with children and encourage their participation in the Mass should consider helping with Children’s Liturgy of the Word.
There is training for leaders, and a background check is required for anyone over 18 years old.
